Industrial Inspiration

View Gallery

Orla and Martin had been living with their previous kitchen for fourteen years when they decided it was about time they updated with a more contemporary and creative look. ‘The old kitchen was a traditional cream hand-painted style with oak worktops, which we had put into the house when we purchased it fourteen years ago. Although nothing was wrong with the actual kitchen and it was in good condition, it was very dated and I really wanted a scheme that was more sleek and contemporary in style,’ says Orla.

Getting inspiration online and visiting kitchen showrooms, Orla had an idea of the look she wanted by the time she met with her kitchen designer, Eamon Doran of Doran Kitchens & Home. ‘I didn’t visit many actual showrooms; in fact, Dorans was the second one I went to. I had an idea in my head of the style of kitchen that I wanted and got other inspiration from designs I’d seen on the internet. When I spoke to Eamon, I instantly got a really good vibe from him. He seemed to really get what I wanted and went out of his way to incorporate the ideas I had in mind into a functional kitchen layout.’

Dealing with Eamon during the design process and Declan as project manager during the installation process, Orla was extremely impressed by the level of service and the quality of craftsmanship as well as the details of the design itself. ‘I knew I wanted a kitchen that was contemporary and slightly industrial in style, yet something that would not look too out of place with the decor of the rest of the house. Eamon managed to put it all together and achieve the perfect balance!’

Taking the cabinetry to full ceiling height, Eamon designed the furniture to meet the ceiling with coving for a fully fitted finish. And, maximising the corner on the opposite side of the room, he has created a fabulous walk-in pantry in solid oak for all the family’s everyday food storage with shelving and drawer storage ensuring there is literally a place for everything. With such generous storage, this bespoke pantry allows for stockpiling, perfect for entertaining and getting prepared in the run-up to Christmas! Other design elements that make this design sing are the pops of copper, seen in the handles and feature canopy, the textured herringbone flooring and the patterned splashback, all which jump out against the dark and dramatic painted finish in Railings.

As well as designing, making and installing the kitchen, the team at Dorans also took care of all remedial works, which helped ensure the smooth running of this renovation project. ‘I cannot recommend Dorans highly enough. From the first day I met with Eamon until the very end of the project, every single person who worked on the job were an absolute pleasure to deal with. Nothing was ever a problem and all aspects of the refurbishment were done to the highest of standards.’

How did the design evolve? Our client had done her homework and had a very strong vision of the colours, style and finishes she wanted, but struggled a little with the layout. I made the suggestion of the full height cabinetry, all on one side of the room and suggested the larder to provide much needed storage and extra working space. This corner walk-in pantry, finished in natural solid oak provides key storage in a compact room without being overpowering in the space.

What are the key design features? One of the most notable is the bespoke cabinetry designed to full ceiling height with coving finish continued around the room, which adds to the furnished and luxurious feel of the space. The skirting with profiled plinth has toe-space recesses, allowing you to stand closer and more comfortably to the work surface. Copper accents bring warmth to the scheme, with the bespoke canopy fascia and antique copper handles throughout bringing striking contrast to the dark painted finishes. The walk-in pantry makes great use of a potentially unused corner, providing valuable storage without impinging on the floor space.

Did you provide any other services? Yes, we provided a full remedial package on this project, which was a kitchen renovation of a house bought as a new build fourteen years ago. The package included plumbing, electrics, tiling, plastering, brick wall cladding and painting and decorating. We can provide this service on all our projects, giving clients peace of mind that all aspects of their project is being managed and finished to the same exacting standard as their bespoke kitchen.
