When Evan and Vanessa bought their property in Malahide, they knew they were taking on a large renovation project. The kitchen in particular was very dark but the couple saw it as a wonderful space, which simply needed some attention in order to fulfil its potential.
‘The house was old and the kitchen had been there for around thirty years so it really needed updating to transform it into the practical and welcoming space we wanted,’ explains Evan. ‘My wife and daughter love to cook and bake so it was important that the kitchen had the right look but also remained a functional working kitchen for all our practical needs.’ The property benefits from fabulous high ceilings, which enhance the feeling of space and sense of grandeur, so this was one of the several existing features the couple wanted to take advantage of. The kitchen footprint also had other beautiful original features, such as the exposed brickwork and wooden ceiling beams, so this provided a very strong starting point for the new interior scheme. Wanting to incorporate these features while creating a fresh modern look, the couple carefully considered the style they wanted to achieve. Pinterest and interiors magazines were the starting point for ideas but the main source of inspiration came from the showroom of Doran Kitchens. ‘Dorans had been glowingly recommended and when we visited their showroom in Newry, we instantly saw why. We were so impressed by the designs on display and just loved what we saw.’
Evan and Vanessa were clear about what they wanted and have mused over how wonderful Dorans were to work with and how well the project has turned out. Designer, Eamon Doran took charge of the project and worked closely with the couple to ensure they arrived at the ideal design, tailored to perfectly suit this unique room, which features some of the tallest cabinets the company has ever created! Based on the couple’s brief for a contemporary yet classic look, maximizing the high ceilings and incorporating the wall of exposed brick, Eamon has designed a well considered scheme to suit this family’s style and practical needs. ‘We loved the whole design process with Doran Kitchens – they were very efficient and the whole project was a true collaboration between us and the Dorans team.’ During the project, it was decided that the old utility room should become part of the kitchen in order to maximise light and space. Indeed, Eamon brought many suggestions to the table that the couple would not have considered, such as the floor tiles and the Caple downdraft extractor, which rises from the island to create an uninterrupted view. The beautiful weathered oak breakfast bar feature was another of Eamon’s ideas, which adds texture and contrast to the design. ‘Dorans exceeded all of our expectations and we are delighted with the final outcome. Our kitchen is everything we imagined and more!’
